Adaptive Crayons for Fine Motor Development

As a former art teacher and now occupational therapist, discovering Effortless Art Products made my heart so happy! Have you ever wondered why small children prefer markers to crayons? Most do, in my experience.

I used to think it was because they glide easier across the paper than crayons, but in reality it is most likely due to the fact that markers are wider, and therefore easier to hold than normal crayons.

Hand grasps develop in a typical sequence in children, beginning around one year with a full-fisted dagger-like grasp, and mastering a functional grasp around school age (5 or 6 years old).

Effortless Art Products created a crayon (recycled!) in a triangular shape and a middle grip to facilitate what is a typical pencil (tripod) grasp, using the thumb, index and middle finger.

Effortless Art crayons facilitate an open web space and enable children to manipulate the crayon with ease.

Level 1 crayons are suitable for the youngest artists, just beginning to explore art materials and creating through drawing.

Level 2 crayons are suitable for young children ready for a slightly smaller grasp, but still struggling with the size of typical crayons.

However, children of all ages can enjoy these for a variety of creative uses!

In addition to their fantastic crayons, Effortless Art has also created the Dex Art Pen Grip. This snazzy pen grip is also super comfortable, and facilitates an appropriate pencil grasp for all ages, allowing the pen to rest on the open web space. It includes a designer pen, but can be used with pens or pencils.

I cannot wait to use these in the clinic with children working on handwriting goals and increasing fine motor development!!
